Welcome!

Hi, I'm Gabriel Krug, an artist working out of Chelsea, MA. I have a BFA from Tufts University and the School of the Museum of Fine Arts. I specialize in portraits of people and pets, either with pencil and paper or with acrylic paint on masonite panel.
Masonite is made up of compressed wood fiber, and is lightweight and durable with a very smooth surface. The smooth surface of masonite allows me to capture small details with delicate brushstrokes that would be more difficult to render on a textured surface like canvas.
I use acrylic paint rather than more traditional oil paint. The process of painting in acrylic involves building layers of paint rather than blending as in oil, and is well-suited for the crisp and precise details in my work. I also feel that the color of acrylic paint can often be brighter and more vibrant than oil paint.
Portrait Commissions

People often have a specific photo in mind that they would like me to work from. I can also come to you to do a photo shoot if you live in the Greater Boston area. We can explore creative ideas and options for pose, lighting, and setting in order to come up with something that matches your personal vision.
Let me know if you have any special preferences or creative ideas; I'm confident that I can make your portrait into anything you want.
Pricing
Please contact me with your request and I can give you a quote. Pricing ultimately depends on the number of hours a work will take to complete and every painting is unique, so it is difficult to give a set list of prices. Factors include size, number of subjects, and level of detail in the figure and background.

Artist Statement
I've always been drawn to portraiture because I am fundamentally interested in people: their stories, complexities, contradictions, and the range and subtleties of emotions and thought expressed through the slightest gesture or facial expression.

As a portrait painter, I feel somewhat like a medium. Through the reproduction of what is seen mediated through the eye of the artist, involving deliberate and unconscious choices, my portraits describe more than just the physical appearance of the subject, revealing something about their personality, presence, and history.
